A 24-year-old man was sentenced to double life imprisonment in connection with the rape and murder of Lemogang Jumaar (15) which happened at Ext 22, Jouberton in July 2013.
It is alleged the victim was alone at home when the incident happened. Her mother went to the mall and when she came back later that evening, knocked on the door and when her daughter did not respond she went to sleep inside the outside shack. She became suspicious the following morning when there was still no reply and that is when she opened the door with her spare keys – only to find the child lying on the bed.
The police were called, as well as the EMRS who declared the victim dead on the scene. The inquest docket was registered and post-mortem results revealed that Jumaar was raped and strangled. Moreover, a forensic investigation was also conducted which positively linked Ben Daniel Lebeko (24) to the crime in 2018.
Lebeko, who was already in prison serving another 12 years of rape imprisonment on a separate case, was rearrested for rape and murder. He made his final appearance before the High court seated at Klerksdorp on the 14th November, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and another life imprisonment for murder.
The station Commander for Jouberton SAPS, Colonel Moses Selepe, commended the police that was involved on the case for a splendid job as he attributed this sentence to a good collaboration between them, the community and the National Prosecuting Authority.
“We made a commitment as the police of Jouberton to eradicate gender-based violence, we take every case seriously and conduct a proper investigation”, Selepe said. He also expressed his gratitude to the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Ansie Du Preez, as he said her dedication and diligence is appreciated.
