For the past 10 years, the Gert-Johan Coetzee bursaries are presented annually to potential students who want to pursue their future in the fashion industry.
The bursaries include national sponsors such as Bernina South Africa and Acer Africa as well as internships at the Gert-Johan Coetzee studio, where candidates learn from industry experts.
This year, the Fashion Design Bursary includes a three-year scholarship at North West School of Design, as well as a brand new Bernina sewing machine and Acer Laptop to the value of R180 000.
The Fashion Communications & Buying Bursary includes a three-year scholarship at North West School of Design, as well as a brand new Acer Laptop to the value of R170 000.
Fashion Design Bursary winner: Bulelwa Qupe
Bulelwa Qupe is a bubbly 26th year old from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
She matriculated from St. George’s College. She has been interested in Fashion Design from a young age, as she often played dress up. Her style icon is the late Princess Diana as she was truly a style icon, and everything she wore, the masses followed suit.
Her favourite designer is Gert-Johan Coetzee, and she loves everything he designs especially for SA A-list celebrity, Bonang Matheba.
Fashion Communication & Buying Bursary winner: Matilda Luthango
Matilda Luthango is 25 years old from the cold town, Harrismith in the Freestate Province.
Fashion Design has been her true calling, as long as what she could remember, as fabrics, accessories and everything related to fashion design let her mind go into fashion “overdrive”. Her style and fashion icon is Bonang Matheba, as she literally “kills” everything she wears. SA A-list designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee is her favourite designer and she also loves the elegance and simplicity of the late designer, Coco Chanel.
