Applications for the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Bursary and the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Communication Bursary are now open!
Celebrity fashion designer, and North West School of Design alumni, Gert-Johan Coetzee plans to grow the South African fashion industry through the Gert-Johan Coetzee bursary programme.
“Every year we try to do something for the country of fashion, and I believe the youth of our country is our most important asset. We have to mould and sculpt the youth into the future leaders of tomorrow. We have a bursary programme that has been running for the past seven years to great success.”
North West School of Design offers two courses – the Fashion Design Course and the Fashion Communication Bursary – worth over R180 000 and R170 000, respectively.
Gert- Johan believes in giving back to the community, and his two annual bursaries, one for each course, at NWSD will grant two talented individuals the chance to also pursue their dreams in fashion.
The Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Bursary is valued at over R180 000 and includes tuition for three years, as well as a sewing machine (Bernette – Chicago 5 sewing machine) sponsored by Bernina SA. Acer Africa also sponsors an Aspire A315 -51 I5 laptop, valued over R 10 000.
The Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Communication Bursary is valued at over R 170 000 and includes tuition for three years, as well as an Aspire A315 -51 I5 laptop, valued over R 10 000.

The bursaries exclude accommodation, transport and meals.
The closing date for the competition is on 11 October 2021, whereby semi-finalists will be selected by Gert-Johan Coetzee and telephonically contacted by North West School of Design by the 19th October 2021.
The semi-finalists will then receive their next assignment.
The respective winner for each of the bursaries will be notified telephonically after the 6th of November 2021.
The theme for the bursaries is Style Tribes: Subcultures. Grade 12 learners and anyone with a valid Grade 12 Certificate are welcome to enter.
