A 34-year-old man has been arrested following a brutal murder of a 63-year-old woman at Ext 2 Kanana which occurred on the 30th March 2019 at 23:50.

It is alleged Beatrice Nombuiselo Nkonzo was sleeping at her home with her 2 grandchildren when the suspect broke one of the windows and entered the house. He went to a bedroom where the 18-year-old grandson was sleeping and asked him where his sister was. He told him that his sister was not around and the suspect went to the main bedroom where the old woman was sleeping with her 9-year-old grandson and asked her where her granddaughter was, it is alleged that when the old woman said she is not around, the suspect set the bedding, the woman and her grandson were sleeping on, alight.

When the 18-year-old Khanyisa Nkonzo realised the house was on fire he ran to rescue the 9-year-old child and took him outside, but unfortunately, his attempts to rescue his grandmother drew a blank as the fire had aggravated. The police were and other emergency services were called and the old woman was found already burned to ashes. She was declared dead on the scene. The 9-year-old boy was rushed to Tshepong hospital where he was admitted after suffering burn wounds and is in a stable condition.

The police worked tirelessly until the suspect was nailed the following day at Kanana. He is expected to appear before Orkney magistrate court to face charges of murder, attempted murder and arson.
