A young woman was killed and two men injured following a head-on collision between two bakkies on the R30 just outside Orkney on Monday 11 June.
ER24 paramedics say they arrived on the scene at 08h50 to find one bakkie in the left-hand lane of the road and another on the side of the road. Both vehicles had sustained a considerable amount of damage in the collision.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered the lifeless body of a young woman in the driver’s seat of one of the vehicles. According to ER24 she had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life, she was subsequently declared dead on the scene.
Two men were trapped in the other vehicle and fire services had to use specialized equipment to free both patients. One man, believed to be in his late 40s, was in a critical condition while the second man had sustained moderate injuries.
Once freed, paramedics treated the men and provided the critically injured man with advanced life support interventions. He was then airlifted to a nearby private hospital by the ER24 One plan helicopter. The second man was transported to hospital by ambulance.
The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
